Wyróżnia się dwa typy sieci opartych na tej topologii:

• częściowa siatka (ang. partial mesh), w której niektóre węzły sieci tworzą pełną siatkę z innymi węzłami podłączonymi tylko do jednego lub dwóch innych węzłów. Częściowa siatka nie zapewnia nadmiarowości, takiej jak pełna siatka, ale jest mniej kosztowna. Topologie częściowej siatki są ogólnie stosowane w sieciach peryferyjnych, które łączą się ze szkieletem o topologii pełnej siatki.

Takie rozwiązanie ma oczywiście swoje wady i zalety. Przede wszystkim sieć zbudowana w topologii pełnej siatki jest praktycznie niezawodna. Istnienie kilku zapasowych połączeń sprawia że w przypadku awarii łącza, informacje mogą przepływać innymi łączami i osiągnąć cel. Dzięki temu poza siecią znajdzie się tylko komputer, który spowodował awarię.

Ponadto topologia ta umożliwia przepływ informacji wieloma ścieżkami sieciowymi. Podstawową wadą takiego rozwiązania jest to, że jeśli używanych jest wiele węzłów, ilość mediów oraz ilość połączeń staje się ogromna.

Jako że budowa sieci opartej na topologii oczkowej jest bardzo kosztowna nie jest ona zbyt powszechna. Jej wysoka niezawodność sprawiła jednak iż sieci takie znalazły zastosowanie w miejscach, gdzie nie może być mowy o żadnych awariach, jak na przykład w instytucjach wojskowych, czy elektrowniach atomowych.
